About Treat My Cat

Treat My Cat is a library of practical guides for the everyday problems cat owners run into: fleas, hairballs, upset stomachs, itchy skin, picky eating and more.

Every guide follows the same shape:

  • What's likely going on, in plain language.
  • What you can safely do at home, and what you should never do.
  • When it's time to see a vet, with the warning signs spelled out.

How we write our guides

  • Based on veterinary sources. Each guide draws on published guidance from organizations such as the American Association of Feline Practitioners, Cornell Feline Health Center, International Cat Care, the Companion Animal Parasite Council, the ASPCA and the Merck Veterinary Manual. The sources for each guide are listed at the bottom of the page.
  • No medicine doses. Doses depend on your cat's weight and health, so we always point you to the product label or your vet.
  • Vet first when it matters. Every guide spells out the warning signs that need a vet. We never play down a vet visit to recommend a product.
  • Reviewed and updated. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. We update guides when guidance changes or a reader spots a problem.
  • Independent. Some links may earn us a commission (see our affiliate disclosure). That never decides what we recommend.

Our guides are general information, not a diagnosis. Your vet knows your cat, so when in doubt, call them. In an emergency, contact your vet or nearest emergency clinic. For a suspected poisoning, you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
